Subject: UPDATE From Your Peekskill Westside Neighbrhd Assn: HOUSE FIRE ON 400-Blk of Simpson, NO ONE INJURED

Hi Everyone,
This UPDATE covers Tuesday's early am fire on the 400-block of Simpson in
our neighborhood:
* no one injured, David Parr has emailed a link to Video of the fire:
David, Luchina, Gilles and Luc who live right next door needed to flee for
safety and emotional traumatic concern for the younger ones. They said the
Fire Dept did an amazing and quick job of getting the fire under control.
They thank everyone for their concern and support.

* NOTE: Misinformation seems to be circulating about our WNA Association
UPDATE about a suggestion of what the community could do about The Cove, the
abandoned Condo complex on Simpson-- someone facetiou
sly suggested to have a
bonfire, and that was a reference to that issue, not this home that had this
fire.
* Reaction from the City: Lt. Catherine Johansen, Community Policing and
Mayor Foster
UPDATE:
I. Basic info:
A resident of the 500-block of Simpson called  911 around 3 am to report the
attic blaze. Thankfully, the owners of the residence were not there at the
time and no one was injured.
The owners have not lived there since another similar fire almost a year
ago. According to the Mayor's email below, the owners are working with the
City to repair the home and bring it back up to code. According to the law
and City Code, City of Peekskill Code Enforcement has had to issue numerous
violations to repair the violations. The electricity was not on at the time
of the fire, according to Lt. Johansen.
(With the City's and Neighborhood Assn's new relationship with Habitat for
Humanity, we will see if there is a way to support the owner's maintenance
and improvement of the residence too, taking this direction from the City,
most likely Deputy City Manager Brian Havranek.)
II. Reaction from the City
Community Policing:
Lt Johansen said that the cause of the fire is still unknown, but the first
step is already underway which is the City's Cause and Origin team to
investigate and report. She said that because they area of the home had been
significantly burned, investigators need to take=2
0time in doing their
research and reporting.
Because there is no one currently living in the home, Lt Johansen:
"...Patrols are being reinforced for everyone¹s safety.  It is imperative
that if you see anyone suspicious (SUCH AS AN UNFAMILIAR PERSON, ETC), call
the police desk (737-8000) right away with a description of what you are
observing. The investigation into the cause and origin of the fire is
continuing and there is nothing to report on that at this time."
From Mayor Foster:
" As of [yesterday] afternoon I believe the situation is calming down. The
home owner is talking with City staff about violations, property maintenance
and other concerns. The police and fire will investigate to determine origin
of fire. "
If you have any questions or concerns about any of this, contact Lt Cathy
Johansen at 914-862-1445 or email her:
